Lachlan Nielson, Architect

Bearded men are just a little bit wiser than most. It’s not a scientific fact. It’s just a cold hard fact that you wash your face with in the morning. Lachlan taught me this while I was trading with him in Brisbane. You see, only a bearded man can figure out how to renovate his house, design homes for a number of clients, cook lunch and drink rosè on the deck, all at once. Lachlan's brain goes under his practice called Neilson Workshop. Very literally he has a workshop under his house where he prototypes a lot of designs for his clients and often builds the finished products too. This is the power of the beard.

The Pixel Trade was photographing his house, a constantly changing entity, where he tests out ideas and designs to make sure it is ‘bang on’ before incorporating them into designs. Once we finished the rosè and photographing his home, I had the pleasure of shooting a bar he collaborated on the design with called Super WhatNot... Yes a few more drinks were involved. Like most trades with architects I always leave a little more thoughtful and appreciative towards the people designing the built environment.
