ikono
The digital age will never sound as good as the stone age or bronze age and especially the golden age, there are some projects out there, however, that make you feel pretty lucky to be part of this frequency age. ikono is one of those kids that you’d be proud of it if was a child and you were the parent. It’s a digital art gallery, a platform where you can sit for hours browsing through video artwork from filmmakers and artists and trust me you will lose hours.
The Pixel Trade was photographing the launch of their festival where they would stream video art twenty four hours a day for the entire month of September, 2013. Now Just because I’m posting this well after the fact doesn’t mean you miss out, because they still have all the content on their website and you can still kiss away hours of your day watching it. There was also the Berlin launch of Binoculars to Binoculars happening as a joint celebration.
Interview with Maru
Describe your most memorable adventure as a child.
As a child I used to sneak out of my home to search for stray cats and kittens. Once I was trying to catch a cat from a garden several blocks away, and met a very, very old man. He told me many stories about the Mexican Revolution in 1910 when he was a child.
What is the most exciting part about ikono?
It's great to work together with so many interesting people to create a platform that makes art available for everyone, everywhere. As the direction in which the company goes is still being defined, the possibilities that this platform could open up for artists to make a living from their work as an alternative to the commercial gallery system is very exciting.
In your opinion, is film art ‘growing’ each year?
For sure, as technology becomes more accessible at a lower cost for average consumers, more people have the opportunity to express themselves using video as a medium. The medium of video itself has also reached a certain maturity so that the quality and complexity of these films is also increasing.
Is there a film you would recommend people see?
Video art: "Adiós Amigo!" by Sergio Belinchón. http://vimeo.com/23912821.
Narrative FIlm: "Me and You and Everyone we know" by Miranda July.
What is something you haven’t told someone in a long time?
That I am an artist.
If you could wake up tomorrow morning and do anything, what would it be?
I'd go directly back to sleep, and hang out in bed all day (specially if tomorrow is a dark, cold day). Perhaps even read a book or watch a film!
If you could teach a group of people one thing, what would it be?
I would teach people how to name and organize files properly. If that is too boring, I'd encourage them to look into their past and create a narrative of how they came to be as they are.
Describe your most memorable adventure as an adult.
Leaving everything back home and wandering to Europe. The result is two wonderful children and a new home.
If you had to recommend a favourite music album, what would it be?
I love to listen to soundtracks. Barry Lindon is one of my favorites.
